ERM-410 Data Literacy

This course provides students with an introductory set of tools for data and number literacy. The course introduces concepts related to the management, analysis, and presentation (figures and graphs) of data. While not a formal statistics class, you will be introduced to fundamental concepts in statistics and statistical reasoning as well as the use of statistical software.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Perform basic data manipulations: Students are given data files in a variety of formats. They must make requested changes to the data sets (e.g., recoding data, sorting data, computing new variables)
  2. Produce and interpret descriptive statistics for quantitative data: Students are given data sets. They will be able to summarize the data using descriptive statistics and write a memo presenting those results.
  3. Interpret results using fundamental statistical concepts: Students are given data sets. They will be able to analyze the data in relation to a story problem and write a memo presenting those results.
  4. Create and interpret data visualizations: They will be able to create appropriate visualizations that help show important features of the data and write a memo presenting those results.
